Treviso console table in Natural against an old limestone wall in a Quebec City front hall
At home

Honey wood on old stone.

Morning in a Quebec City front hall. A lamp at one end, a stone bowl at the other. The beads catch the light, and the floor underneath stays open.

The Treviso story

One row of beads.

A plain top. Four square legs. One row of round wooden beads all the way around.

Treviso is a simple table with one detail. The beads run under the top on all four sides, and the last bead at each corner stands a little proud. Each leg starts as a square block, steps in, and tapers to the floor.

Natural shows the honey tone of the wood. Black turns the beads into a quiet texture.

The design

One detail, all the way round.

About sixty beads run along the front and more along each end. Under them sit a flat band and a slim apron. Nothing else.

Drawn by hand

It starts on paper: a top, a row of beads, four legs.

Stepped legs

Each leg is a square block that steps in, then tapers.

An edge-glued rubberwood board, a strip of wooden beads, a square leg offcut, a sanding block and linen on a plaster ledge
The materials

Rubberwood, grain showing.

Treviso is made of rubberwood. The top is narrow boards glued edge to edge, so you can see the joins, and the grain changes from board to board.

Each table shows its grain a little differently. That is the wood, not a flaw.

Rubberwood

The seller lists rubberwood for the table and a solid wood frame.

Rated to 225 lb

The seller rates the top to 225 pounds.

The detail

A top made of boards.

Look closely at the top. Narrow boards run its length, glued edge to edge, with the joins left to show.

The edge is square and plain. The beads sit just under it, so the top stays clear for keys, a bowl or a lamp.

A Treviso corner: the last bead past the edge, the band and apron, and a square leg with its bevelled step
The leg

Square, then stepped.

Each leg begins as a square block under the top. A small bevelled step takes it in, and from there it tapers to the floor.

At the corner the bead row turns, and the last bead stands a little past the edge.

Living with Treviso

Make room at the door.

A console gives the front hall a place to put things down. Treviso is 15.75 inches deep, so it fits a narrow entry or the back of a sofa. The 42.2 inches between the legs leave room for a basket.

Choose Natural for a warm, light room. Black for a crisp line against pale walls.
