Two Civita dining chairs at a round smoked-oak table in a Vancouver condo in soft morning light
At home

A curved chair at a quiet table.

Soft cloud over the hills. A round table in smoked oak. Two pale chairs, pulled out and waiting. Civita is a dining armchair, and its one curved rail wraps around whoever sits down.

The Civita story

One curve, four legs.

One curved rail. Four square legs. A linen-look seat.

Civita is built from a single idea. One wide rail bends from the front of one arm, around the back, to the front of the other. It is the back and both arms in one line. Everything else stays plain.

It comes as a set of two.

The design

One rail, no break.

The rail runs in one unbroken curve from arm to arm. Its flat ends rest on the tops of the two front legs, which rise straight up from the floor to hold them.

Drawn in one line

The materials

Linen-look and pale rubberwood.

The seat is covered in a linen-look fabric with a fine, slubby weave and a neat piped edge. The frame is rubberwood in a light, softly washed finish.

Grain and tone vary from chair to chair. That is the wood, not a flaw.

Linen-look

A fine slub weave in warm cream, over a foam seat pad. Only the seat is upholstered.

Rubberwood

The rail, the four legs and the seat frame are rubberwood, in a pale, softly washed finish.

Back and arms in one

One continuous rail makes the back and both arms. There is no separate back piece.

The detail

Look closely at the rail.

Up close, the rail shows how it is made: small blocks of wood joined side by side, with a fine, open grain.

A small oval plug marks the joint where the rail meets each back leg.

The base

Four square legs, nothing between.

Each leg is square in section and narrows toward a flat foot. The front two rise straight up to carry the ends of the rail.

No stretchers, no rungs, no bars. The floor under the chair stays clear.

Living with Civita

A pair for the table.

Civita is a dining armchair, sold as a set of 2. Put the pair at the head and foot of a long table, or on either side of a small round one.

The arm rail is 27.5 inches high, so these chairs will not tuck under most table aprons. They sit at the table's edge instead.
