At home

A quiet line by the door.

Winter light on an old stone wall in Quebec City. A bowl at one end, a single branch at the other, and forty-two inches of mango wood between them.

The Amelia story

Two cuts in every trestle.

A thin top. Two sculpted trestles. One curved stretcher.

Each trestle is a flat panel of solid mango wood. A tall slot is cut down from the top, so the panel rises as two slim posts. An arch is cut up from the floor, so it stands on two feet.

The stretcher runs low between the trestles. Its top edge dips toward the middle.

The design

Mid-century lines, solid mango wood.

The edges of every slot and arch are softly rounded. The top is one inch thick and runs about four and a half inches past each trestle.

Close-up of an Amelia trestle: the slot's round bottom, the stretcher joint and the arch between the feet
The base

Slots, arches, one stretcher.

The slot ends in a round bottom. Below it the trestle is solid, and the stretcher meets it there in a square joint.

An arch at the floor leaves two feet under each trestle, four in all. Small dark metal brackets under the top hold it to the trestles.

Walnut or Mocha.

Walnut is a warm mid brown, at home with pale oak floors and white walls. Mocha is a deep espresso brown, for contrast in a light room.
